Spanish becomes present in Los Angeles, California

The University of Guadalajara has characterized itself for its inclusive nature. Thus one of its goals is to expand its cultural and artistic promotion programs with the Latin communities in the city of Los Angeles, California.

This is the reason why the first edition of LéaLA was born in 2011, a project supported by the University of Guadalajara Los Angeles campus and by the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). This event aims at promoting reading and books in Spanish, as well as recognizing the Latin population, its culture, and customs.

In previous editions, it has included the presence of important figures such as Isabel Allende, Lydia Cacho, José José, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Pilar del Río, Beto Cuevas, Benito Taibo, Elena Poniatowska, among others.

This year the fourth edition of LéaLA returns, now in a biennial format, with Mexico City as the guest of honor. At LéaLA, you will find presentations and signings of books in Spanish; conferences and lectures on culture and the historical roots of Latin American countries; gatherings of Latin American writers; discussion forums; and the participation of celebrities of the Latin community.

For this edition, Cultura UDG selected a series of performances representatives of its area which have transcended due to their technique, history, and content. In this way, the puppets of Luna Morena take the Pequeño Cirko of the Luna y Cuentos para no dormir to the Los Angeles Convention Center, while Juan José Arreola’s Bestiario leaves the ink and paper in a musical theatre performance directed by his grandson, Alonso Arreola, at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. In this same space, Gurrola’s letters are revived with the staging of Jazz Palabras, and to finish off, the stage of the Montalban Theatre will gather the Bichir family to perform “El Último Preso”.

The appointment is from May 15 to 17 of 2015 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. See the activities program on the website: LéaLA. Admission is free, join us.
