SECOND BI-YEARLY JOSÉ ATANASIO MONROY PAINTING CONTEST 2014

After the record-breaking participation in this event, the President of the University of Guadalajara’s Costa Sur University Center (CUCSur), Alfredo Ortega, along with Igor Lozada, the UdeG’s Secretary of Outreach and Promotion announced the names of the six winners of the second bi-annual Atanasio Monroy Painting Contest at the Art Museum.

Sergio Villaseñor Reyes with Equilibrio and Jacob Flores Carrillo with Silencio perpetuo II—both artists from Guadalajara—as well as Gustavo Carpio García, the author of Desplazamientos, from Mexico State, are the three artists the judging panel selected as winners in the category of Established Artists.

In the New Creators category the first three places were given to César Raúl Rámirez Gómez (Tonalá, Jalisco) for El conejo no es como lo pintan; Carlos Iván Torres Ornelas (Guadalajara), author of Tatoo; and Dulce Olivia Ferreira Santiago (Mexico City) with her painting 16:02 AM.

This bi-annual festival broke the record for the number of entries as well as in the number of participating states. In the first contest only 16 states participated, and in the second, 29, with the majority of participants being from Jalisco.

The call for paintings was open for six months and 727 works were accepted for evaluation by the judging panel made up of the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Secretariat of Culture (SC), Mónica Ashida; the Director of the Zapopan Art Museum (MAZ), Viviana Kuri; and Carlos Ashida, curator of the Cabañas Cultural Institute (ICC).

After the judging panel divided the works into the categories of New Creators, with 503 paintings, and Consolidated Artists, with 214 pieces (with 10 uncategorized pieces), a pre-selection was made at the Juan José Arreola State Public Library. There the judges made a final evaluation before delivering their verdict.

The awards ceremony was held at the Costa Sur University Center (CUCSur) last Friday, October 24 during the 20th Annual University Culture Week in Autlán de Navarro. After the ceremony the winning paintings formed part of an exposition held in November at the Atanasio Monroy Cultural Center.

In January, 2015 the six winning pieces will be included in the tour the collection will be making to all of the University of Guadalajara’s University Centers.
